Abstract
The Bahamas National Trust Strategic Plan is a national policy with a cross-sectoral approach. The timeframe of the Strategic Plan is 5 years between 2013 and 2017. The overall purpose of this Strategic Plan is to protect natural resources with a special emphasis on national parks and protected areas, in an environmentally sustainable manner.
As an important food source, the protection of marine resources will be strengthened in order to prevent the decline in fishery stocks.
In order to protect globally and nationally important biodiversity, a Bahamas-specific Red List will be established for endangered species and measures will be taken to protect key species and ecosystems from the introduction of invasive plant or animal species. Moreover, marine protected areas will be designated as a key goal for marine conservation. The conservation will be integrated into development for environmental sustainability, by promoting best practices to prevent the over-exploitation of marine resources, degradation of natural habitats and ecosystem services. Biodiversity conservation will be ensured at national level with a special emphasis on the protection of sea turtles, conch, flamingos and other regional species.
Public-participation will be promoted in the environmental management, national park and protected area management. To this end, environmental awareness will be raised through education and the Bahamas National Trust shall serve as the national leader on environmental education and best practices by providing training and materials. Furthermore, the Bahamas National Trust shall strengthen the cooperation between all stakeholders including government agencies, local government, non-governmental organizations, international organizations and communities to provide their participation in environmental decision-making processes.
National parks system will be developed with an ecosystem approach through efficient management plans, annual workplans and long-term scientific monitoring programmes for all national parks. Economic growth will be ensured in a balance with natural resources management and the protection of natural and cultural heritage. Financing mechanisms will be strengthened by raising funds from the Preservation Partners Fund as well as from the private and corporate foundations to contribute to long-term environmental management for future growth. Ecosystem preservation will be ensured for sustainable economy by optimizing ecosystem services. In addition to that, national park management will be improved in line with the tourism sector to increase its revenue potential, while managing the negative impacts of tourism and promoting sustainable use of natural resources. Environmental protection will be strengthened in a scientific basis to monitor and assess the distribution, status and extinction risks of the key species, habitat conditions and the identification of current and future threats.
Climate change adaptation and mitigation will be integrated into the management and conservation of national parks and protected areas.
