Electricity Act No. 48 of 2015.

The purposes of this Act are to: (I) create an electricity supply regime which recognizes that safe, least cost, reliable and environmentally sustainnble electricity is vital to the economic and social welfare of The Bahamas and encourages and promotes diversification in the generation, transmission, distribution and supply of electricity; and energy efficiency, energy conservation, and the development arid use of renewable energy resources and technologies; (II) secure the long-term energy security of The Bahamas through the establishment of a legal and regulatory framework that ensures the provision of a safe, least cost, reliable and environmentally sustainable supply of electricity; and (III) establish an electricity sector policy for the supply of electricity throughout The Bahamas consistent and in accordance with the goals of the national energy policy.
This Act lays down provisions on the electricity sector policy and objectives; functions and powers of the Bahamas Electricity Corporation, Bahamas Power and Light Company Ltd (BPL) and Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA); rates and scales of charges for electricity by BPL; requirement of licence for entry into electricity sector; management and operation of electricity sector; renewable electricity generation and renewable energy self-generation projects; electricity supply systems and public electricity suppliers in the Family Islands; promotion of of energy efficiency programs; consumer protection; terms and conditions for the issuance, amendment and revocation of licences; fees and charges determined and levied by URCA; appeals to the Utilities Appeal Tribunal; and offences, fines and penalties.
