Abstract
The Bhutan Building Rules facilitate and regulate building construction in Bhutan and apply to all urban areas. The objectives include safe building construction, healthy living environment, promotion of traditional architecture and promoting design standards and procedures. The procedure for obtaining a building permit and occupancy permit is laid down. The change of building use is allowed if the building conforms to land use schedule, structural safety and other requirements as prescribed. The rules relating to site coverage, set back lines, compound walls, parking areas and building height are provided. Further, criteria and rules to be conformed with such as plinth height, fire safety, minimum floor space, ventilation shaft, elevators and drainage are also made. The water supply and sanitation control regulations are laid down along with maintenance of the building.
