Abstract
The National Nutrition Strategy and Action Plan (Plan) of Bhutan provides the strategy and action plan for improvement of nutritional security of the people, especially those at higher risk of malnutrition such as children, women, adolescents, the elderly and people with special needs. It consists of six chapters: 1. Introduction; 2. Analysis of the Current Situation; 3. Rationale, Vision, Mission & Targets; 4. Objectives; 5. Governance; and 6. Strategic Result Areas.
Chapter 1 gives a background of the development of this Plan and highlights the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration. Chapter 2 analyses the nutrition related issues including child undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, obesity and the direct and indirect causes for the same. Chapter 3 lays down the vision, mission and guiding principles of the Plan. The vision is to be a nation free from all forms of malnutrition where all her people achieve optimal health, nutrition and wellbeing. Chapter 4 states the objectives of the Plan and lays down the results framework. Chapter 5 provides for the implementation plan of the Plan and describes the governance structure, which includes a National Nutrition Task Force. Chapter 6 contains the eight strategic results areas of the Plan with the priority areas mentioned for each of the strategic results area. Further, the actions plans under each of the strategic areas are also laid down.
