Abstract
This Strategy provides for guiding principles and techniques for the development of vegetable varieties that are adapted to local farming systems in Bhutan. The objects include developing pest, disease and climate resilient varieties; exploiting the local gene pool diversity to develop suitable varieties; generating knowledge, information and technology on vegetable breeding; and promoting collaboration on vegetable breeding within and outside Bhutan. The priority areas identified by the Strategy are 1. Establishment of Focal Vegetable Breeding Centres; 2. Germplasm; 3. Plant Breeding Capacity Building; 4. Identification of Vegetable Crops to Initiate Breeding Work; and 5. Breeding Methodology. Further, the Strategy provides for the institutions responsible for implementation, timeframe, fund mobilization, legal and policy framework, and reporting.
