Abstract
The Game Ranching Policy for Botswana provides details direction for the development of a game ranching industry and serves to give implementation guidelines for the appropriate section of the Wildlife Conservation and national parks Act of 1992.
The policies objectives are : a) to increase economic returns from wildlife resources outside national parks game reserves and wildlife management areas; b) to promote the development of a game ranching industry that will provide a commercially viable and environment friendly industry; c) To maximise the role of the private sector in the development of game ranching as well as the processing and marketing of its products; d) to facilitate the development of an internal and external market of wildlife and its products; e) to provide up to date knowledge and information on game ranching; f) To promote the use of game ranches in the conservation of threatened and endangered species ; g) to ensure the well-being of game population in the wild; h) to facilitate and give preference to participation by Botswana in the ownership and management of game ranches; i) to increase the impact of game ranching industry on rural employment, economic diversification and national economy.
The Policy promotes amid its objectives intensification strategies to make game ranches more productive whilst encouraging environmentally friendly solutions and species conservation strategies.
The Policy recognises game farming as a viable solution to rural employment issues as well as to ensure economic diversification.
Moreover the policy analyses the impact of insufficient security of tenure, capital, and inadequate extension and information dissemination of game farming on economic welfare of rural areas.
The Department wildlife and national parks is the main implementing agent of this policy, however the private sector will be the main driving full set behind development of a viable game ranching industry. The policy provides details as well on the specific departmental roles.
