Abstract
The Health Sector Strategic Plan is a national policy covering the period between 2014 and 2024. The Plan provides an overall framework of health priorities and reflects an innovative approach in the organization and delivery of health and wellness services to the population. The Plan lays down the strategic objectives for the Ministry of Health which is based on the WHO Health System Framework that identifies six key pillars in a health system: governance and leadership; service delivery; financing; human resource in health; health information systems; and medicines and technology. The strategic goals for the Ministry of Health are: (I) integrated health services based on primary health care for improved health outcomes; (II) strengthening the organization and management of health services; (III) achieving greater equity, cost effectiveness and efficiency in the allocation and use of health resources (improved health financing to achieve universal health coverage); (IV) strengthen capacity for human resources for health planning to meet present and future health sector needs; (V) strengthening of the Belize Health Information System to support evidence based planning in the provision and delivery of health care; (VI) efficient and effective health infrastructure development.
The Plan stresses on the nutritional problems, including high intake of fatty, sugary and salty foods, unbalanced diets, low fruit and vegetable consumption, and overall poor food choices. Moreover, it addresses the issues of good nutrition and healthy lifestyles, and the adverse impacts of overweight and obesity, high morbidity and mortality due to non-communicable diseases, poor food safety practices and lack of physical activity on human health.
