Abstract
The National Plan of Action for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases lays down actions to improve life expectancy and wellness of Belizeans by prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases and their risk factors. The timeframe of this plan is 10 years covering the period between 2013 and 2023. The goal of this plan is to reduce premature mortality from NCDs and the chronic disease burden by 25% by 2023 by combining integrated action on NCD risk factors and their underlying determinants and strengthening health systems so as to reduce NCD morbidity and mortality. This plan focuses on targeting the four major chronic diseases and sets out objectives for the prevention of their risk factors: (I) development and implemention of strategies that facilitate reduction of tobacco and alcohol use; (II) stimulation of inter-sectoral action that promotes the availability, accessibility and consumption of healthy foods by the Belizeans; and (III) development and implemention of strategies that promote physical activity.
