Abstract
Belize’s Third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) strengthens climate ambition under the Paris Agreement, targeting both mitigation and adaptation. Despite being a net carbon sink and contributing minimally to global emissions, Belize faces severe climate risks as a Small Island Developing State (SIDS), including sea-level rise, coastal erosion, hurricanes, and droughts. NDC 3.0 sets enhanced targets for 2030 and new goals for 2035, aiming to avoid 6.2 MtCO₂e by 2035 through renewable energy expansion (75–80% of electricity from domestic sources), electric mobility adoption, waste management improvements, and increased carbon sequestration in agriculture and forestry. These efforts align with Belize’s Long-Term Low-Emissions Development Strategy (LT-LEDS) and net-zero vision for 2050.
Adaptation is central to NDC 3.0, addressing vulnerabilities in coastal zones, water, agriculture, health, tourism, and infrastructure. Key actions include mangrove and coral reef restoration, ecosystem-based coastal protection, climate-smart agriculture, watershed conservation, and resilient housing policies. Health systems will integrate early warning for climate-sensitive diseases, while tourism and fisheries adopt sustainability standards. Gender equality and social inclusion are mainstreamed across all sectors.
