Abstract
This Strategy provides for the adaptation strategies and action plan to address impact of climate change in the agriculture sector of Belize. It consists of five parts: 1. Overview of the Agriculture Sector; 2. Projected Climate Change impacts on the agriculture sector; 3. Adaptation Strategies to address the Adverse Effects of Climate Change on Agriculture; 4. Implementation Capacity; and 5. Action Plan.
Part 1 contains an overview of the Agriculture sector in Belize and includes the economic framework, geography, demography, critical issues in the sector, institutional and regulatory framework, and policy framework. Part 2 discusses the current climate of Belize in general and in various regions. It also talks about climate modelling, historic trends and future projections as well as crop modelling and impact of climate change on agriculture. Part 3 lays down the adaptation strategies with focus on aspects such as drainage, irrigation, watershed management, crop and livestock tolerance, pest management, biodiversity, soil management, and aquaculture.
Part 4 describes the institutional capacity and gaps, policy environment, technical capacity, and stakeholder interests and awareness. Part 5 provides the five major actions that have been identified for effective implementation of the adaptation measures and categorised as : i. Infrastructure and Equipment; ii. Research and Training; iii. Education and Early Warning; iv. Commodity Insurance; and v. Monitoring and Documentation.
