Abstract
The National Cultural Policy provides the policy framework for the safeguarding of Belize’s tangible and intangible cultural heritage; the promotion of cultural expression and creativity; the development of cultural and creative industries and the wise management of Belize’s cultural resources.
The objectives of the Policy are various and cross sectoral: to facilitate the development of mechanisms for effective protection and promotion of culturally related practices, skills, goods and services from which economic benefits are derived to reduce poverty levels; To nurture and forge the development of Belizean national identity; To foster awareness, appreciation and respect for the cultural diversity of Belize; To promote intercultural understanding; To safeguard, conserve and transmit knowledge of Belize’s cultural heritage; to promote an appreciation of and respect for the aesthetic and functional values of the surroundings, the history, national heroes and national symbols of Belize; to make provisions for their full participation in cultural expression and cultural development.
Moreover the Policy wants to create and encourage appropriate institutions and organisations that are able to foster cultural development, to foster the development of the human capacity for specialization and leadership in fields; To promote communication and institutional collaboration and coordination in the development of the cultural sector. In particular, regarding the youngster, the Policy wants To promote viable cultural and creative industries and entrepreneurship particularly among the youth and women.; To ensure that cultural polices and those policies related to industrial development, environment protection, and tourism product enhancement are aligned and integrated; To identify and facilitate the securing of resources for funding of cultural development and promotion.
