Abstract
This document outlines the Belize’s National Plan of Action to prevent, deter and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (NPOA-IUU). The instrument has a sectoral approach and is applicable at the national level. It has been developed in accordance with the International Plan of Action to prevent, deter and eliminate IUU fishing (IPOA-IUU) adopted in 2001 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
The plan aims to make fisheries more productive and sustainable. Like the IPOA-IUU, Belize’s NPOA-IUU addresses general measures targeted at all States (Chapter 4.1), as well as measures targeted specifically at flag States (Chapter 4.2), coastal States (Chapter 4.3) and port States (Chapter 4.4). The NPOA-IUU is focused on measures applicable to the high seas fleet.
