Abstract
2030 Emissions Reduction Plan: Canada’s Next Steps for Clean Air and a Strong Economy is Canada’s first Emissions Reduction Plan under the Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act. The plan lays out the next steps to achieve net zero emission by 2050. The Plan uses economic modelling to show a strategies to achieving Canada’s 2030 target and 2050 target.
The Plan begins by looking at strategies for emissions reductions and economic growth across the entire economy, then at strategies for key sector. Economy-wide initiatives include: put a price on carbon pollution, use/production of green fuels, support transition to Clean Growth Economy, Taking a holistic approach to Reduce Methane.
Initiatives by sector include: Expand non-emitting energy deployment and development (Energy Sector). Capping emissions and advancing carbon capture, storage and utilization (Oil and Gas Sector). Provide incentives for producers to adopt on-farm beneficial management practices and natural-climate solutions – such as rotational grazing, cover cropping, regenerative agriculture, nutrient management, manure management, and agroforestry; support the development and adoption of clean technologies; invest in transformative science, measurement and knowledge transfer (Agriculture Sector). Put in place landfill methane regulations, Advance circular economy (Waste Sector). Continue to protect critical habitat such as old growth forests; Cultivate the mitigation potential of blue carbon; Explore the potential of nature-based negative emissions technologies (Nature-Based Solutions). Investment in deployment; tax incentives (Clean Technology and Climate Innovation)
