Abstract
The Climate Preparedness and Adaptation Strategy: Actions for 2022-2025 is part of broader investments by the provincial government to help people and communities recover from recent disasters and prepare for climate impacts in the future. Actions in the Strategy are grouped into four key pathways: 1) Foundations for success: partnerships, knowledge and decision-making; 2) Safe and healthy communities; 3) Resilient species and ecosystems; 4) Climate-ready economy and infrastructure. Pathway 1 includes partnerships with Indigenous Peoples and ongoing commitment to reconciliation. Actions also work to improve our understanding of climate change impacts through data collection and monitoring networks, integrate climate adaptation into decision-making across government and expand outreach and education. Pathway 2 works to build safe and healthy communities through funding and resources to reduce the risks from heat waves, flooding and wildfires, as well as targeted initiatives such as cultural and prescribed burning, floodplain mapping and an extreme heat preparedness framework. Actions also work to improve food security and ensure the health system is resilient and ready for the future climate. Pathway 3 focuses on enhancing the resiliency of species and ecosystems through improved understanding of the impacts of climate change on key species, habitats and ecosystems as well as protecting and maintaining healthy watersheds and addressing the threats posed by ocean acidification and sea level rise. Pathway 4 highlights actions to build a resilient economy and climate-ready infrastructure by supporting key industries to prepare for a changing climate, and working to make our roads, highways and buildings resilient and able to keep people, goods and services moving safely in a changing climate.
