Environmental Goals and Climate Change Reduction Act (SNS 2021, c 20).

This Act is based on the following principles: (a) the achievement of sustainable prosperity in the Province must include Netukulimk, sustainable development, a circular economy, and equity; (b) the achievement of sustainable prosperity is a shared responsibility among all levels of government, the private sector and all Nova Scotians; (c) climate change is recognized as a global emergency requiring urgent action; and (d) such others as may be prescribed by the regulations. “Netukulimk” means, as defined by the Mi’kmaq, the use of the natural bounty provided by the Creator for the self-support and wellbeing of the individual and the community by achieving adequate standards of community nutrition and economic well-being without jeopardizing the integrity, diversity or productivity of the environment. The Act states the long-term objective of the Government, achieve sustainable prosperity, and provides for the strategies to achieve that.
The Act then continues setting reduction targets for greenhouse gas emissions and indicating sectoral goals, these include: Climate change response and greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals; Active transportation goals; Land protection goals; Water and air goals; Environmental assessment goal; sustainable procurement; Aquaculture and food goals; Circular economy growth goal; Diversity, equity and inclusion goal; Business, training and education support goals.
The Act also establishes the Sustainable Communities Challenge Fund.
