Abstract
A Made-in-Ontario Environment Plan - Preserving and Protecting our Environment for Future Generations has the scope to keep the province beautiful by protecting air, land and water, preventing and reducing litter and waste, supporting Ontarians to continue to do their share to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and helping communities and families prepare for climate change.
The Plan is based on three guiding principles (Clear Rules and Strong Enforcement; Trust and Transparency; Resilient Communities and Local Solutions) and four core strategic priorities areas: 1) Protecting our Air, Lakes and Rivers; 2)Climate Change; 3) Reducing Litter and Waste in Our Communities & Keeping our Land and Soil Clean; Conserving Land and Greenspace.
The Plan enables more inclusive and efficient food systems by identifying the causes of and promoting viable solutions for food losses and waste in the region. Initiatives include: educate the public and business about reducing and diverting food and organic waste, develop best practices for safe food donation. The Plan also recommends that Ontario’s farmers continue to demonstrate leadership in environmental stewardship, which is important to their livelihood and promotes opportunities to participate in the decision-making and plan implementation process.
Disaster risk management consideration are explicitly and comprehensively included in the objectives, targets, activities of the Plan. The government commits to update policies and build partnerships to improve local climate resilience, for instance through a review of land use planning policies to make communities more responsive and adaptive to changing weather conditions, such as improving the way that stormwater is managed. The Plan continues supporting programs and partnerships intended to make the agriculture and food sectors more resilient to current and future climate impacts. In particular the government will support on-farm soil and water quality programming and work with partners to improve agricultural management practices.
