Abstract
The Preventing Poverty. Promoting Prosperity. Nova Scotia’s Poverty Reduction Strategy (2009) provides a framework for addressing the needs of those most vulnerable and those at risk of falling into poverty, while promoting the prosperity necessary for Nova Scotia to grow. The vision for 2020 is to break the cycle of poverty by creating opportunities for all Nova Scotians to participate in the prosperity of the province and enjoy a better standard of living. The strategic directions and consequent investments are four: 1) Enabling and rewarding work - Promote work experience; Remove disincentives to work; Prepare for the future through training and education; Create employment opportunities. 2) Improve support for those in need - Improve supports and access to necessities; Enable greater participation in society. 3) Focus on Children - Strengthen supports for children and families; Break the cycle of poverty. 4) Collaborate and Coordinate - Increase capacity for coordination and integration; Increase public awareness; Develop evidence-based policy and programs; Strengthen horizontal governance and accountability.
