Abstract
Water for Life: a renewal (2008) confirms that goals and directions of the "Water for life: Alberta's strategy for sustainability" remain valid, but it commits to improve safeguarding of water sources and accelerate actions. Moreover, the new Strategy introduces a new water management principle: Water for Life will be integrated into other policies and plans, such as Land-use Framework planning, ensuring better resource management integration. Furthermore, the strategy highlights several aspects to act on for each goal and direction.
Regarding "Safe, secure drinking water" (Goal 1) the Strategy suggests reviewing and improve the management of small drinking water systems that are currently unregulated, to design and implement regional drinking water and wastewater solutions and work cooperatively indigenous communities, among others.
On "Healthy aquatic ecosystems" (Goal 2) the Strategy poses a particular attention to actions aimed at developing a provincial action plan to improve the health of significantly impacted aquatic ecosystems, set water conservation objectives on all major basins; and to finalize and implement a new wetland policy for Alberta.
Regarding "Reliable, quality water supplies for a sustainable economy" (Goal 3) the Strategy for instance promotes to enhance the surface water rights transfer system and to set a viable governance system that supports sustainable management of water.
