Abstract
The Cook Islands Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan is a sectoral document covering the entire territory of the Cook Islands adopted in 2002 for an undefined period. The main objectives of the policy are setting up a range of priorities and actions for endangered species management, invasive species management, ecosystem management, equitable sharing of benefits and access to biodiversity, biodiversity knowledge management, awareness, education and mainstreaming, as well as financial resources and mechanisms for biodiversity.
The Strategy foresees the development of a programme to survey and conserve marine animals harvested for food or financial gain, as well as develop a program to survey and conserve the rarer livestock species.
The Strategy has been designed on the basis of the National Biodiversity Workshop attended by relevant stakeholders. It was proposed to establish a special Bio- security Agency to handle all aspects of plant and animal movement into the country and between the islands, both terrestrial and marine.
