Abstract
This Act provides rules for maritime transportation of goods including hazardous substances and oil, and defines functions and powers of authorities for purposes of control of maritime transportation and for the implementation of international obligations of the Cook Islands in the field of maritime transportation and protection of the environment. The Minister may from time to time make marine protection rules for purposes of: (a) implementing Cook Islands' obligations under any marine protection convention or international practices or standards relating to the protection of the marine environment as may from time to time be recommended by IMO; or giving effect to the provisions of the Prevention of Marine Pollution Act 1998.

This Act shall come into force on the day on which it receives Royal assent.
Notes
This Act is supplementary to the Prevention of Marine Pollution Prevention of Marine Pollution Act 1998 and only to the extent there is any inconsistency between this Act and the Prevention of Marine Pollution Act 1998, shall this Act prevail.This Act repeals the Shipping Act 1998 and the Sea Carriage of Goods Act 1940. It makes minor amendments to the Ports Authority Act 1994-1995 and the Ship Registration Act 2007.
