Decree No. 39/2026 approving the Regulation on the registration of designations of origin and geographical indications.

This Order approves the Regulation on the registration of Denominations of Origin (DO) and Geographical Indications (GI). Its primary objective is to establish a clear legal and institutional framework for the identification, registration, protection, and use of DOs and GIs as industrial property rights. The Order aims to ensure fair competition among economic operators, safeguard consumers through reliable and transparent information on product quality and origin, and guarantee respect for intellectual property rights, while securing fair remuneration for producers and service providers whose products or services derive added value from their geographical origin, traditional know-how, or specific production methods. In addition, it seeks to use DOs and GIs as instruments for sustainable economic, social, and environmental development. It promotes rural development, preservation of cultural heritage and traditional knowledge, maintenance of rural populations, and the valorisation of agriculture, fisheries, crafts, and tourism, particularly in disadvantaged and peripheral regions. Through detailed rules on producer groupings, product specifications, control and certification mechanisms, and enforcement measures, the regulation strengthens product differentiation based on quality and geographical origin, enhances consumer protection, and contributes to long-term territorial sustainability in Cape Verde.
