Abstract
This Resolution approves the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling, 1946, as well as the Protocol to the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling, concluded in Washington on 19 November 1956. This Convention, consisting of 31 sections and one Appendix, regulates whale killing for commercial purposes. In particular, it specifies fishing methods, quota and seasons for all whales species (using fishing methods such as the cold grenade harpoon which shall be forbidden from the beginning of the 1980/81 pelagic and 1981 coastal seasons). In accordance with Article V(1)(c) of the Convention, commercial whaling, whether by pelagic operations or from land stations, is prohibited in a region designated as the Indian Sanctuary. It also regulates the use of a factory ship or a land station for the purpose of treating any whales which are classified as Protection Stocks.
