Abstract
The aim of this Act is to provide for comprehensive protection of the Antarctic environment and related ecosystems. The Act was adopted in accordance with the Antarctic Treaty and the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty. It establishes rights and obligations applicable to individuals and legal persons who carry out activities in the Antarctic. The Act is composed of the following Sections: (1) General provisions; (2) Principles of protection and exploitation of the Antarctic; (3) Requirements for carrying out activities in the Antarctic; (4) Environmental Impact Assessment in the Antarctic; (5) Protection of fauna and flora of the Antarctic; (6) Proceedings concerning wastes; (7) Prevention of marine pollution in the Antarctic area; (8) State administrative authorities; (9) Inspection and penalties; (10) Common and transitional provisions.
