The Peat Use Reduction Strategy is a proactive approach to address the environmental challenges posed by peat use and contribute to a more sustainable and carbon-conscious future.The strategy aims to significantly reduce the use of peat in both commercial horticulture and hobby gardening sectors by promoting the development and adoption of peat substitutes. By 2030, the goal is to minimize peat use in commercial horticulture and eliminate it entirely in hobby gardening by 2026. This aligns with the provisions of the 2030 Climate Action Programme and supports the long-term phasing out of peat use in horticulture. To achieve these targets, the strategy includes initiatives to support farms transitioning to peat-reduced substrates and establish specialized service points for individual consultations. By driving peat reduction efforts and protecting peatlands, the strategy aims to preserve our natural resource base and secure a sustainable future.
