Abstract
The National Food Waste Strategy 2024–2027 outlines a comprehensive plan to reduce food waste across the entire food value chain. The strategy is grounded in a vision of creating a sustainable, circular, and resilient food system, aligned with Denmark’s climate goals and broader environmental ambitions. It targets both upstream (production and processing) and downstream (retail, food services, and households) sectors, proposing legislative, economic, and behavioral interventions. The strategy emphasizes cooperation among government, industry, research institutions, and civil society to foster innovation, promote awareness, and ensure accountability through improved data collection and reporting mechanisms. The Strategy includes and consists of 15 initiatives under four tracks: 1. Involvement of relevant stakeholders and simplifying the regulatory framework; 2. Collecting more knowledge and data; 3. Information campaigns; and 4. International engagement.
Key initiatives include setting clear national reduction targets, supporting businesses in adopting food waste-reducing practices, encouraging consumer behavior change, and enhancing redistribution systems for surplus food. The Strategy also stresses the importance of integrating food waste considerations into education and public procurement policies. With a timeline extending to 2027, the strategy aims not only to cut waste but also to reinforce Denmark's leadership in sustainable food systems by turning food loss reduction into a driver of green growth and social responsibility.
