Abstract
This Order regulates veterinarians’ purchase, storage, use, dispensing and prescribing of medicinal products for animals, supplementing EU rules on veterinary medicinal products. It sets rules on which medicines may be used for animals, including authorised veterinary medicines, certain human or pharmacy-prepared medicines under cascade rules, and registered homeopathic medicines, and prohibits or restricts the use of specified hormones, beta-agonists and hormone-like substances in production animals except under defined therapeutic or zootechnical conditions. It reserves certain medicines and routes of administration to veterinarians, regulates injections and other administration methods, and sets detailed rules on prescribing prescription medicines for production animals in different herd-health arrangements for pigs, cattle, mink, sheep, goats and aquaculture animals. It also imposes specific controls on antibiotics, including restrictions on fluoroquinolones, third- and fourth-generation cephalosporins and colistin, rules on dry-cow therapy and mastitis treatment, prescribing of antiparasitic and preventive medicines, local anaesthesia and pain treatment for piglet castration, repeat prescribing, written instructions, record-keeping, VetStat reporting, labelling, storage, pricing, and penalties.
