Order No. 400 on minimum animal welfare requirements for the keeping of pigs.

This Executive Order establishes minimum animal welfare requirements for pigs kept for agricultural purposes, covering both indoor and outdoor production systems and the importation of pigs from third countries. It regulates staffing, daily inspections, record-keeping, housing, space allowances, flooring, lighting, ventilation, feeding, water, enrichment materials, group management, care of sick or injured pigs, breeding practices, surgical procedures such as castration and tail docking, and humane killing. It also introduces specific requirements for boars, sows, gilts, piglets and fattening pigs, including restrictions on confinement of sows, provision of nesting material, protection against heat and weather, and risk assessments and action plans aimed at preventing tail biting and reducing tail docking. Breaches may result in fines or imprisonment, and transitional periods apply to certain housing requirements until 2035, 2041 or 2051.
