Abstract
The Order sets regulations on the management of ballast water and sediments from ships' ballast water tanks in order to prevent the spread of invasive and hazardous substances when discharging ballast water. The Order applies to all ships built before 2009 with a ballast water capacity of 1500 to 5000 cubic meters. The Danish Nature Agency is responsible for the approval of ballast water treatment system use, granting approval of systems using active substances approved by the UN Maritime Organisation.
The Order consists of 7 Chapters and 6 Appendices: Purpose, definitions and scope (1); Handling of ballast water (2); Handling of sediments (3); Exemptions (4); Approval of ballast water treatment systems (5); Monitoring, sampling and intervention (6); Penalty and entry into force (7).
