Abstract
The present Regulation governs how fertilizers—both organic (like manure and plant-based compost) and inorganic (chemical fertilizers)—may be used by agricultural enterprises in Denmark. Its primary goal is to protect the environment, particularly water bodies, air, and soil, from nutrient runoff and ammonia emissions that can lead to pollution and ecological imbalance. It applies to both farmers and fertilizer suppliers and includes definitions for various types of fertilizers and usage conditions.
The regulation outlines strict rules on when and how fertilizers can be applied depending on crop type, soil condition (e.g., frozen, saturated), and proximity to environmentally sensitive areas. It mandates the use of ammonia-reducing techniques such as slurry injection and acid treatment and limits application during certain months to reduce nutrient leaching. Detailed recordkeeping is required for all fertilizer use, and violations may lead to fines or imprisonment for serious breaches. The regulation also includes provisions for erosion control, seasonal restrictions, and specific nutrient ceilings for nitrogen and phosphorus to ensure sustainable farming practices.
Overall, this regulation seeks to strike a balance between productive agriculture and environmental protection by setting enforceable standards for fertilizer use and requiring ongoing documentation and compliance monitoring. It also provides flexibility for research activities and outlines fee structures for government oversight.
