Abstract
The present Strategy, by the Danish Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs, outlines Denmark’s strategic direction for developing green jobs within agriculture and related sectors. Recognizing Denmark’s strong foundation in sustainable agriculture, the strategy aims to ensure that the green transition becomes a driver for innovation, job creation, and economic growth. The strategy emphasizes Denmark’s potential to be a global leader in green agricultural solutions and outlines measures to reduce emissions, enhance biodiversity, and secure sustainable food and energy supplies, particularly in light of global challenges such as climate change and geopolitical instability.
The Strategy identifies three key focus areas for job creation and innovation: agri-tech, plant-based foods, and biosolutions. Agri-tech emphasizes the use of precision technology, automation, and digital tools to reduce emissions and resource use. Plant-based food production, including organic and alternative farming methods, is expected to grow, with the goal of doubling organic area and exports by 2030. Biosolutions leverage biotechnology (e.g., enzymes, microbial processes) to replace chemical inputs, reduce food waste, and convert agricultural by-products into valuable products like bioenergy, bioplastics, and alternative proteins. These sectors are expected to generate new employment opportunities and drive exports.
To support this vision, the Strategy proposes a broad set of initiatives under five pillars: 1) creating robust conditions for innovation and growth; 2) positioning Denmark as a center for green agricultural research; 3) ensuring the workforce is equipped with green skills; 4) facilitating the deployment of green solutions; and 5) promoting Danish green solutions globally. Investments in research, education, regulatory reform, and international partnerships are highlighted as essential tools. Overall, the strategy positions the green transition not as a cost, but as an opportunity to reshape Danish agriculture into a competitive and sustainable force both domestically and worldwide.
