Abstract
This Multi-year National Action Plan, based on the strategic documents guidelines of the European Union, describes the development directions of aquaculture in the country. The main purpose of aquaculture in Estonia concerns commercial fish farming, even though aquaculture species are also cultivated for reintroduction into natural water bodies; the Action Plan details the different fish species in Estonian fish farms: salmonids, rainbow trouts, carps, eels, shellfish and algae to be used as biofertilisers and feed additives. The Action Plan focuses on the development of marine aquaculture and of organic aquaculture, in order to increase the potential production of the sector. The Action Plan further defines other activities for a sustainable and conscious use of the marine area, in addition to aquaculture: preparation of a marine spatial planning, for the development of mariculture; provisions for animal health and animal welfare protection, in order to prevent the spread of fish diseases; investment to prevent environmental damages and to address climate change issues; measures to reduce marine pollution; enhancing producers organisations, in order to allow them greater market power and better negotiating conditions on the markets; promotion of knowledge and innovation techniques.
