Permitted objectives are limited to reducing microorganisms, slowing spoilage, preventing premature biological processes, and eliminating organisms harmful to plants or plant products.
It lays down operational requirements for food treatment, including hygiene conditions, record‑keeping for each treated batch, permitted radiation sources, and maximum absorbed dose limits. Only specified food categories may be treated, and the total absorbed dose may not exceed a fixed maximum, including where treatment is carried out in stages. The regulation specifies how the absorbed dose is calculated, validated, and monitored, and requires regular measurement and documentation of treatment parameters throughout the process.
The regulation also sets mandatory rules for indicating ionising radiation treatment in food information. Food that has been treated, or that contains treated ingredients or components, must be labelled using prescribed wording. The indication must appear on the food, packaging where applicable, and accompanying documents, with specific requirements depending on whether the food is supplied directly to consumers or transferred to another operator.
