Prime Minister’s Decree No. 944 of 1989 concerning the establishment of a natural reserve in the Petrified Forest area in Maadi, Cairo Governorate

This Resolution consisting of 6 articles aims at establishing a nature reserve within the boundaries indicated in the area of the Petrified Forest in Maadi of Cairo Governorate. It will be managed by an Executive Council headed by the ……Cairo Governorate, with the membership of representatives from the ministries of culture, defense, tourism, interior, housing, Cairo University, the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, and the Environmental Affairs Agency in the Council of Ministers. Article 3 prohibits to carry out actions, behaviors, activities or procedures that would destroy, damage or deteriorate the natural environment, harm wildlife, marine or plant life, or affect their aesthetic level in the aforementioned protected areas (these actions are indicated in detail). The Executive Council undertakes the functions that aim to develop and advance the reserve, and in particular, to (i) prepare the necessary programs and studies to promote and develop the reserve; (ii) monitor environmental phenomena and make an inventory of terrestrial and marine organisms and establish a dedicated register for each of them; (iii) manage and coordinate the related activities ; (iv) inform and educate the public of the objectives and purposes of establishing nature reserves (art.5).
