Abstract
The Eritrea National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (2026–2030) establishes a strategic framework for the conservation, sustainable use, and restoration of biodiversity. The document recognises biodiversity as integral to socioeconomic development, particularly given the population’s reliance on natural resources, and identifies a continuing decline in ecosystems and species as a matter of regulatory concern. It revised preceding plans by rationalising targets, incorporating monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, and strengthening institutional coordination and resource mobilisation provisions. The Plan defines national biodiversity conditions across terrestrial, marine, and agricultural domains, identifies principal anthropogenic and environmental threats, and prescribes thirteen strategic targets supported by defined actions, indicators, and implementing authorities. These targets address ecosystem restoration, species conservation, sustainable resource use, invasive species control, pollution mitigation, climate resilience, equitable benefit sharing, institutional capacity building, and public participation. Implementation is structured through a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach, requiring integration into sectoral planning and oversight by a national coordinating mechanism.
