Abstract
Essentially, this law repeals and replaces all customs and rules whether written or unwritten which were in force concerning matters provided for within the law. The law provides that a ship shall only be deemed to be an Eritrean ship if it is wholly owned Eritrean subjects, companies incorporated under the laws of Eritrea and having their principal seat of business in Eritrea and foreigners domiciled in Eritrea with their principal seat of business in Eritrea. Any ship registered under this law also has the right to fly the Eritrean flag as well as a duty to display the flag, failure of which is a criminal offence. All Eritrean ships are obliged to be registered, with the exception of ships of the Eritrean Navy. The law also provides for the appointment of a registrar who shall register and keep a register for the purpose of fulfilling the objectives of the law. The law extensively provides for the procedure of registration and the grant of the certificate of registration.
