Commission Decision 2004/594/EC concerning protection measures in relation to highly pathogenic avian influenza in the Republic of South Africa.

Abstract
With a view to preventing the introduction of avian influenza via international trade in live poultry and poultry products, the European Commission hereby establishes particular protection measures. Member States are required to suspend the importation from the Republic of South Africa of the following: (a) live ratites and hatching eggs of these species; (b) birds other than poultry, including pet birds accompanying their owners; (c) fresh meat of ratites; and d) meat preparations and meat products consisting of or containing meat of ratites. Particular exemptions are laid down in article 3.
