Abstract
This Decision is adopted pursuant to Regulation (EC) No. 1221/2009, which establishes an obligation for the Commission to develop sectoral reference documents for specific economic sectors in consultation with Member States and other stakeholders. These sectoral reference documents are necessary to help organizations to better focus on the most important environmental aspects in a given sector and allow evaluating, reporting and improving the organizations' environmental performance. They must include best environmental management practice, environmental performance indicators and, where appropriate, benchmarks of excellence and rating systems identifying environmental performance levels in those sectors. The Annex to this Decision sets out the sectoral reference document on best environmental management practice, sector environmental performance indicators, and benchmarks of excellence for the tourism sector.
