Abstract
This Protocol specifies the conditions for the pursuit of fishing activities by Union vessels and sets out the provisions for implementing the sustainable fisheries partnership. Union vessels in possession of a fishing authorization issued by the Cook Islands under the Agreement shall be authorized to engage in fishing activities in the Cook Islands' fishing areas, except protected or prohibited areas. The Union shall provide financial contribution for access to the Cook Islands' fishery areas and sectoral support to contribute to the development of sustainable and responsible fisheries in Cook Islands.
The Parties shall cooperate in monitoring the activities of Union vessels in the Cook Islands' fishery waters during the period covered by this Protocol, recognizing the sovereignty and sovereign rights of the Cook Islands over its fisheries resources. The Joint Committee may reassess and decide to review the fishing opportunities to secure the sustainable management of tuna and tuna-like species in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean. The implementation of this Protocol may be suspended at the initiative of one of the Parties under the conditions referred to in Article 13 of the Agreement. The Parties may terminate this Protocol in the cases and under the conditions referred to in Article 14 of the Agreement.
