Abstract
Both parties agree on sustainable management of all types of forests. The objective of this Agreement is to provide a legal framework to ensure that timber and timber products imported into the Union from Côte d'Ivoire have been legally produced and to promote trade in said timber and timber products and implement the principle of sustainability. It also provides a basis for dialogue and cooperation between the Parties with the aim of facilitating and promoting its full implementation and strengthening the enforcement of forest law and governance.
This Agreement provides for the establishment of FLEGT licensing scheme between the Parties for the verification and certification of legally produced timber and timber products intended for shipment to the Union. The Union shall not accept shipments from Côte d'Ivoire for import into the Union if they are not covered by FLEGT licences. The licensing authority shall issue FLEGT licences covering shipments of timber produced legally produced in Côte d'Ivoire and intended for export to the Union, in accordance with the procedures set out in Annex V.
