Abstract
The present Act establishes a legal framework for determining boundaries and dividing water areas in Finland, particularly in cases involving multiple landowners or conflicting claims to water resource. The Act prescribes that, in villages lying by a lake, each shall own a part according to the boundary and allocation, so that each controls more of the water and the underlying ground that is closer to its shore than to others. If a bay extends in length and width to eight kilometers or more, no village shall have authority farther into the water than up to five hundred meters from the point outside the shore where, at normal water levels, a depth of two meters begins. The same rule shall apply in saltwater at open sea shores and outside the skerries. The Act includes rules on customary fishing rights.
