Abstract
This Act applies to geological extraction, transport and storage of carbon dioxide. It sets provisions for the prevention of environmental pollution for the concentration of substances caused by these activities, and which involve risks of contamination to the environment. Carbon dioxide may not be geologically stored in the water borders within the territory of Finland or the Finnish EEZ. The ban does however not apply to geological storage of carbon dioxide if the amount is less than 100 000 tons, and if the purpose of storage is for research, development or testing of new products and processes. The carbon dioxide captured within the territory of Finland can be forwarded for geological storage only within the European Union Member States or Member States' economic zones and their continental shelves in adherence to the meaning of UNCLOS (Treaty Series 49 - 50/1996). It may not exceed levels that could cause danger or injury to health or the environment or which may impair the security or integrity of the storage site, transport network or an associated facility.
