Abstract
The present Act lays down rules on the establishment, functions, and responsibilities of the Sami Parliament, which is the representative body for the Sami people in matters concerning their language, culture, and self-governance within their traditional territories. The jurisdiction of the Sami Parliament shall cover the Sami language, culture, and their status as indigenous people. In matters under the jurisdiction of the Sami Parliament, it may initiate actions, make representations, and provide opinions to authorities. Additionally, in these matters, the Sami Parliament exercises decision-making authority as stipulated in this or any other Act.
The Act contains 45 articles organized in the following chapters: 1. General provisions; 2. The responsibilities of the Sami Parliament; 3. Term of office, organs, and activities; 3a. Accounting and auditing; 4. Elections to the Sami Parliament; 5. Amendment to the Sami Parliament decisions; 6. Special provisions.
