Abstract
This SDP is a national policy with a cross-sectoral approach. The timeframe of this Plan is 5 years between 2019 and 2023. The objective of this SDP is to ensure sustainable, competitive and resilient agriculture sector which provides economic opportunities, environmental sustainability and food and nutrition security for all Fijians. To this end, the five key strategic priorities of this SDP are: food nutrition, sustainable livelihoods, climate resilience, commercial agriculture and strengthened service delivery.
In order to ensure food and nutrition security for all Fijians, this SDP develops strategies with a strong multi-sector approach supported by Food and Nutrition Security Policy. Access to local, adequate, safe and nutritious food will be improved for communities through increased production in rural and urban communities. The adoption of local food gardens by schools and demand for diverse, nutritious and safe food will be increased.
Economic opportunities will be diversified through increased farmer participation in existing and new demand-driven markets, with a special emphasis on women and youth in the crop and livestock sectors. The transition to commercial agriculture will be accelerated through increased farmer access to loans, grants, insurance and basic financial services; increased farmer, youth and agribusiness participation producing market driven commodities; and improved value chain opportunities, financial literacy, business planning and farm management.
The institutional, technical and scientific capacity of the Ministry of Agriculture will be improved in terms of climate-smart agriculture. Access to resilient crop varieties, livestock breeds and social safety nets and market products will be increased to ensure climate change adaptation and mitigation in the agriculture sector. Moreover, the awareness and adoption by farmers of sustainable resource management and climate smart agriculture practices will be increased.
