Fiji’s Third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC3.0) outlines an ambitious climate action plan for 2025–2035. Despite contributing only 0.004% to global emissions, Fiji, as a Small Island Developing State, faces severe climate threats such as sea-level rise, intensifying cyclones, and ocean acidification, which jeopardize its economy, ecosystems, and communities. This NDC3.0 builds on the Climate Change Act 2021, embedding legally binding commitments to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. It strengthens mitigation targets, including a 36% reduction in energy sector emissions by 2035 and achieving 100% renewable electricity generation by that year. The plan also expands sectoral coverage to waste, agriculture, and forestry, while introducing systemic reforms to enable decarbonization.
Adaptation and loss-and-damage response form critical pillars of NDC3.0. Fiji prioritizes resilience across agriculture, infrastructure, health, biodiversity, and oceans, integrating nature-based solutions and disaster risk reduction. The focus include: Promotion of climate smart agriculture, agroforestry, sustainable fisheries & aquaculture; Strategic review and realignment of Fiji’s National Biodiversity Strategic Action Plan (NBSAP) 2020-2025, 30% degraded ecosystems restored, promotion of nature-based solutions, review and realignment of all environmental legislation by 2035; 100% EEZ sustainable management by 2035, 30% Marine Protected Areas, restoration of blue carbon ecosystems, and ocean acidification monitoring; etc. For the first time, Fiji introduces commitments to address climate-induced loss and damage, including planned relocation of vulnerable communities and protection of cultural heritage. Implementation depends heavily on international climate finance, technology transfer, and capacity building. Through this enhanced NDC, Fiji demonstrates fairness and ambition, aligning national efforts with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C goal and calling for global solidarity to safeguard vulnerable nations.
