Abstract
This Policy is a national policy with a multi-sectoral approach. The timeframe of the policy is 12 years between 2018 and 2030. The overall objective of this Policy is to support the wellbeing of current and future generations in a socially equitable and environmentally sustainable manner through net-zero emissions economy.
The resilience to climate change will be increased through the strengthening of the interrelated systems that support and define human wellbeing, ecosystem health, and economic stability. Therefore, this Policy sets out climate change response strategies by recognising the need for timely and robust actions given the scale of the climate crisis and nature of Fiji’s vulnerability to climate impacts. The legal and institutional framework will be developed to strengthen the long-term governance arrangements, planning processes, and evidence-based decision-making. The resilient development will be accelerated through the use of national standards of compliance and improved national capacity for strategic foresight. Climate change adaptation and mitigation will be enhanced through multi-sectoral approach and multi-stakeholder collaboration. Climate change adaptation will be integrated across all sector plans and strategies and adaptation strategies will be developed to secure equal and sustainable access to the products, resources, and services that support human health and wellbeing and to increase ecosystem preservation, natural resource redundancy, and environmental resilience. Climate resilient food security initiatives, freshwater protection strategies, and investments in health infrastructure and services will be increased to reduce the negative impacts of climate change on human health and wellbeing. Moreover, the overall resilience of Fiji’s agricultural sector will be increased through investments in the research and introduction of climate resilient crop types and strains, the expansion of aquaculture, climate-smart agricultural practices, and innovative crop insurance schemes. Climate change mitigation will be enhanced by increasing the use of renewable energy resources by 2030 and achieving net zero annual greenhouse-gas emissions by 2050. Fiji’s natural carbon sinks and carbon reservoirs will be preserved. The greenhouse-gas mitigation initiatives will be prioritized to increase national resilience and help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Financing mechanisms will be strengthened for effective climate change response.
