Abstract
The present document contains Fiji's National Strategic Plan on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) prevention and control for the period 2015-2019, adopting a multi-sectoral, Wellness centred approach. Its aim is to contribute to the overall goal of a healthier Fiji, and specifically to achieve a 25% reduction in premature mortality from the four key NCDs by 2025. The Strategy is structured into parts tackling each of the key areas: tobacco, alcohol, diet, physical activity, clinical and public health services, mental health, injuries and violence and a more general overarching section.
Diet-specific objectives include reducing intake of salt per person aged 18+ by 20% by 2019; increasing daily average serves of fruit and vegetables among adolescents and adults by 10% by 2019; and a no increase in obesity prevalence in adults or adolescents. For these purposes, 16 Key Strategies are identified, indicating their responsible authority, timeframe and outputs. Key Strategies include: adopting and implementing regulations to control the marketing of foods and non-alcoholic beverages to children; implementing the Salt, Sugar, Fat action plan; developing early childhood education healthy food guidelines; enforcing School canteen and boarding school guidelines; continuing efforts to support healthier eating through targeted taxation, price control changes or subsidies; supporting ‘backyard’ gardens in settings and homes; etc.
