Policy for Gender in Agriculture in Fiji (2022-2027).

The Policy for Gender in Agriculture in Fiji (2022–2027) aims to address persistent gender inequalities in agriculture, fisheries, and forestry by institutionalising gender mainstreaming across all agriculture-related ministries and programs. Its overarching objective is to ensure that women and men have equal rights, opportunities, and access to resources necessary for productive, resilient, and sustainable livelihoods, thereby strengthening food and nutrition security, climate and disaster resilience, and inclusive economic growth. The policy recognises that closing gender gaps in agriculture enhances overall sector performance by leveraging the complementary knowledge, skills, and contributions of both women and men, particularly in rural areas where agriculture is central to livelihoods and national development.
To achieve this goal, the policy establishes four interlinked objectives: (i) ensuring equality of access to economic resources such as land, water, finance, inputs, equipment, insurance, fisheries, and forest resources; (ii) ensuring equality of access to information, technology, and training needed for secure livelihoods and healthy diets; (iii) promoting equal representation and participation of women and men in decision-making processes for agricultural planning and resource allocation; and (iv) strengthening the capacity of agriculture-related ministries to effectively mainstream gender perspectives through gender analysis, gender-disaggregated data, dedicated gender focal points, and adequate resourcing. Together, these objectives provide a comprehensive framework for transforming institutions, programs, and services so that agriculture in Fiji becomes more equitable, efficient, and resilient for both women and men.
