Abstract
This Plan of Action outlines five priorities for the promotion of women’s rights: formal sector employment and livelihood, equal participation in decision-making, the elimination of violence against women and children, access to basic services, and women and the law. The overall objective of this Plan of Action is to enhance and facilitate the implementation of changes and improvements to the life of women and families in Fiji.
Poverty reduction will be strengthened by improving the quality of life through increased economic participation of women at all levels. The women's economic rights and independence, including access to employment, appropriate working conditions and access to and control over economic resources, will be promoted. The formal sector and employment will be included to reflect the broad economic status of women and their participation and contribution to the overall national economic development. Small, micro and medium enterprise will be developed to improve the communities' livelihoods. Furthermore, communities will be enabled to benefit from sustainable development and management of marine and agricultural resources to maximize long-term economic returns. Gender policy for agriculture and fisheries will be endorsed and adopted.
Gender equality and women's empowerment will be promoted through their active participation in decision-making processes. Women's access to health, education and other basic utilities will be improved. Water and sanitation will be accessible for all women by improving the water supply system in rural areas, providing piped water systems for individual homes, etc. The legal framework will be reviewed in compliance with the requirements of CEDAW, MDGs and other international and regional commitments. Human rights awareness programmes will be carried out for men and women. Support mechanisms will be developed to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women.
The implementation of this Plan of Action will be monitored by the Ministry of Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation.
