Abstract
The purpose of this Act is to promote economic development and to manage and conserve living sea resources within the jurisdiction of the State of Chuuk. For this purpose the Act establishes a State Fishery Zone, grants additional powers to the Micronesian Maritime Authority to regulate the conservation and management of all marine living resources in the Zone, provides with respect to protection of the traditional fishing over submerged reefs and regulates foreign fishing.
The Act also defines offences, prescribes penalties for such offences and provides with respect to measures of enforcement.
The State Fishery Zone extends 12 nautical miles for baselines as defined by this Act. The Maritime Authority shall issue foreign fishing permits. Foreign fishing in internal waters shall be prohibited. The Government may negotiate foreign fishing agreements in accordance with this Act.
