Abstract
The Federated States of Micronesia’s Third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) strengthens its pathway toward achieving the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C goal and its national vision of net-zero emissions by 2050. Building on previous commitments, the NDC expands mitigation across electricity, transport, waste, AFOLU and IPPU sectors, while introducing enhanced adaptation and loss-and-damage measures. It outlines a significant renewable energy transition—70% renewable electricity by 2030 and 80% by 2035—paired with universal electricity access and the adoption of clean cooking. It also introduces electric mobility plans and methane-reduction strategies for waste, alongside nature-based solutions such as mangrove restoration and sustainable land management.
Adaptation is equally central, addressing food security, water protection, biodiversity loss, ocean health, public health risks, climate-resilient infrastructure, and disaster risk management. Given increasing droughts, storms, sea-level rise, and saltwater intrusion, Federated States of Micronesia prioritizes safeguarding agriculture and fisheries, improving coastal protection, and ensuring the resilience of roads, ports, airports, and drinking water systems. The NDC emphasizes inclusion—gender equality, disability inclusion, traditional knowledge, and community-driven planning—while stressing that achieving its targets remains contingent on international finance, technology transfer, and capacity-building support.
